Dean Pettit's TITUSVILLE OUTDOORS

FISHING IN THE TITUSVILLE FLORIDA AREA

Fishing in the Titusville area means either stalking the seagrass flats of the world famous Indian River Lagoon area for trophy Redfish, gator seatrout, Tarpon, Jacks and Snook, Casting in the surf for pompano, bluefish or whiting, or working the shorelines and weedbeds of Fox lake or the St. Johns River for Largemouth Bass and Bream.

The Indian River Lagoon is rapidly gaining worldwide recognition as a fishing destination for redfish. In fact, Martin James, who is known for his popular fishing show "At The Waters Edge" on BBC radio is now a regular visitor to Titusville for flyfishing for redfish in addition to other destinations worldwide such as the Bahamas, the Northwest Territories, and the jungle lakes of the Amazon.

Also, in recent years, the redfish of the northern Indian River Lagoon and the Mosquito Lagoon have been featured in countless regional and national magazines, T.V. shows, and newspapers. The reds here commonly reach 30-35 lbs. About ten years ago, scientists discoverd that unlike other redfish populations around Florida and the Gulf Coast States, the redfish here do not migrate to the ocean to breed due to the lack of an inlet in the area. They live their entire lives in the lagoon, which is why it is not uncommon to see redfish 40-50 inches long cruising our grassflats in water just barely deep enough for them to swim.

The Surf fishing at Canaveral National Seashore is some of the finest on the coast of Florida for pompano, whiting and bluefish with other species such as jacks, spanish mackerel, black drum and others thrown in as well. The St. John's River has long been known for it's largemouth bass, bluegill, and in the winter, migratory shad fishing, while Fox Lake just outside of Titusville offers it's own opportunities for catching bass and bluegills.
